The Role of Parents in Childhood Obesity

In contrast to the dominant framing of the obesity problem as a children’s problem requiring child-focused intervention, recognition is growing of the importance of parents’ role in childhood obesity prevention from the beginning of life through adolescence (Dietz & Gortmaker, 2001; Morabia & Costanza, 2010). After all, parents are responsible for important environmental influences on obesity and health overall. For example, parents are instrumental in children’s repeated experience with foods, ultimately influencing the dietary habits of preschool age children (Birch & Davison, 2001; Lindsay, Sussner, Kim, & Gortmaker, 2006). Later in their children’s development, parents model eating behaviors that influence youth behaviors.

Furthermore, parental television viewing and physical activity behavior influence these same behaviors among youth (Andrews, Silk, & Eneli, 2010; Golan, Kaufman, & Shahar, 2006; Hingle, O’Connor, Dave, & Baranowski, 2010; Lindsay et al., 2006). Although school and community environments play a greater role among school-age children, parents continue to have a role in home food environment, physical activity, and television viewing (Lindsay et al., 2006; Whitaker et al., 1997).
